Movie Gadget Friday: 2010: The Year We Make Contact

Ariel Waldman contributes Movie Gadget Friday, where she highlights the lovable and lame gadgets from the world of cinema.

Last week on Movie Gadget Friday we kicked off our two-part series in honor of the late Arthur C. Clarke with 2001: A Space Odyssey. This week continues our tribute as we look into some of the support systems on board Discovery 1 and the Leonov in 2010: The Year We Make Contact. While we hear Dave Bowman proclaim "My God, it's full of stars", we can't help but dig through this film full of gadgets.

Aperture 2.1 opens the door to image tool developers

Dan Havlik (pdnonline) heard it right from the source. Senior Aperture product manager Joe Schorr tells Havlick that “we want software companies to know they have an open door to develop plug-ins for Aperture 2.1. “We want there to be no limitations on what you can build in Aperture. Havlik believes that “opening up Aperture 2.1 should definitely turn some heads in the professional photography community, especially when they see Havlik’s list of developers already in the process of creating image editing plug-ins. Samsung launches 10.2-megapixel L210 point-and-shoot

Filed under:

Now isn't this bugger just as cute as a button? Even if red isn't your hue of choice, Samsung's L210 point-and-shoot comes in black and silver motifs too, and while the 10.2-megapixel sensor is probably a bit much for a shooter this size, we suppose Sammy's just following the trend. Aside from the pocket-friendly design and 3x optical zoom lens, you'll also find a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, red eye correction, optical and digital image stabilization, face detection, an SVGA movie mode and ten whole megabytes of internal storage. Should that fill up on you during your outing (we know, chances are slim), you can slam an SD / SDHC / MMC card in for additional space. Not too terribly shabby for $199.95, yeah?

Nokia 6300 WiFi = 6300i

We'd have never guessed that the year and a half-old Nokia 6300 would be the target of an update, so color us surprised. The 6300i is a pretty mild refresh of the 6300, offering the same physical appearance, microSD slot, 2 megapixel camera, and Series 40 underpinnings, but the "i" model's got one big ace up its sleeve: WiFi. Nokia's using the opportunity to push the promise of cheap VoIP calling hard -- a nice feature, especially considering the phone's reasonable price of €175 (about $272) -- along with fast internet access. 'Course, without 3G on board, don't stray too far from those hotspots. It looks like we can expect the 6300i (at least in places where the missing 850MHz band isn't needed) some time in the second quarter.

A NY Times reporter was assaulted while taking photos of...

A NY Times reporter was assaulted while taking photos of some men putting up illegal posters near Madison Square Park. The rationale for his inclination not to press charges is an interesting one:

While my assailant's actions were frightening, they resulted in part from what he interpreted as provocation: that is, my taking pictures after he had explicitly warned me not to. He did not take my wallet, cash or briefcase; something he could easily have done while I was on the ground. Nor do I recall him using much more force than was needed to wrest the camera from me. He didn't kick me gratuitously when I was down. He did what he threatened to do, but no more.

In the greater scheme of things, my quarrel isn't with him, anyway. It's with the suits who made the decision in the first place to undertake an illegal marketing campaign.

LG's 5.1 megapixel OZ: a Casio W53CA hides behind the curtain

Well lookie here, LG just announced a followup to its LH2300 Touch Web phone. This one's for the twisty-fold clamshell fans -- a design which makes it look positively Japanese superphone-like. In fact, we're pretty sure it's just the Casio W53CA with LG branding and new Hello UI for Korean consumption. Interesting given that Korea certainly isn't lacking in mega-spec'd phones. Anyway, given the Exilim underpinnings it's no surprise to find a 5.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, 28-mm lens, color correction, 9-point auto focus, and built-in anti-shake technology bunged into the backside. The LCD measures 2.8-inches (down from the LH2300's 3-inch LCD) yet still manages the same 800 x 480 pixel resolution for DMB television and landscape o r portrait web browsing. Inside the little 18.9-mm thin handset you'll find 4GB NAND / 1GB SDRAM and microSD expansion for all your snaps and VGA / 30fps video. Coming to a 3G, CDMA network near you in April... just long as you live in South Korea or Japan.

Researchers add eye control to Da Vinci robosurgeon

Filed under:

Eye-controlled interfaces are far from revolutionary, but giving one of the world's most famous robotic surgeons the ability to interpret eye movements is most definitely a huge leap forward in the pursuit of making operations less invasive. Reportedly, British researchers have implemented new software into the Da Vinci robosurgeon in order to enable human surgeons to "sit at a viewing console directing the movement of the robot's mechanical arms inside the patient's body." Additionally, the program can track eye movements and "build up a 3D map of the area of tissue the surgeon is looking at," and it seems as if the developments could eventually be used on a variety of other ER-based robots. Just make sure your doctor chugs a couple of Red Bulls before putting you under -- wouldn't want those eyes wandering aimlessly, now would we? (Psst, "no-go zones" are included, thankfully.)

Cellphone as microscope on the cheap, bugs beware

Go tech students! This handy idea, brought to you by the minds at University of California, Berkeley, brings up to a 60x microscope to your cell for roughly $75. The 60x attachment is useful for diagnosing things like Malaria while in the field, while its weaker 5x sibling can be used to look at skin conditions. The prototype was apparently made from off the shelf components -- including some low power LEDs that illuminate the subject -- and snaps in place with a modified belt clip. This is a pretty handy piece of kit when you consider how much easier it may be to snap a pic of something and fire it off to a lab via a data connection instead of having to physically bring a sample. We're sure the poor soul featured in the pic we have here agrees, as it looks like he / she may have a tiny shrimp infestation.

Dell's leaked Latitude E6000 and E5000-series of laptops pack GPS, DisplayPort, WWAN, UWB and much more

Our week o' Dell scoops continues with what Dell calls its "mainstream" and "essential" series of Latitude E-series laptops. While the enterprise-ready, mainstream series packs just about everything (and more) that you could hope for in a balanced spec-for-size lappie, the essential series is only essential if you're on a tight budget and just can't live without the comparatively low-end chub. The 15.4-inch E6500 and 14.1-inch E6400 models will replace Dell's D830 and D630 whereas the "essential" 15.4-inch E5500 and and 14.1-inch E5400 carry on the low-end tradition of Dell's D531 and D530. With any luck, these will be Dell's first Montevina / Centrino 2 class machines if they all hit the targeted June release date as planned. AMD fans will see the E5500a and E5400a configurations at about the same time. So what can you expect under the hood? Well, just look at the 5.1-pound E6500 which reads like a suit's, geek fantasy:
  • UWB, Bluetooth 2.1, mobile broadband
  • Integrated GPS, yes GPS
  • New 84WHr slice batteries for "all day" computing
  • LED backlighting, 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, discrete nVIDIA graphics and DisplayPort out
  • Hard, Hybrid, and Solid State disk drive options with eSATA jack for more
  • Optional camera and mic
  • Plenty of security options including contact-less smart cards and encrypted hard disks
Time to pad those budgets a bit, eh CIOs? Full low-down in the gallery below.

Steve Nash directed his own Nike commercial. Nash's original concept for the commercial is clever:

At first, the idea was to shoot on different mediums -- camera phone, 8-millimeter, 16-millimeter (the eventual choice), security footage. My idea was the city was watching me. The genesis was a lot of people film me or take a picture of me in the city on cellphones. If it's such an appetite to see me do normal things, it was an idea to do something people like.

Jay Leno gives Tesla and Vectrix some love

Anyone who knows even a little about Jay Leno knows that not only is he a car nut, but he's also environmentally aware. His large vehicle collection includes a 1909 Baker Electric and many of us know he has a biofueled super car project under way. It's not a surprise then, that on his video-centric website, Jay Leno's Garage, the Tesla Roadster is now being featured. Leno also, not so long ago, did a segment with the Vectrix two-wheel and three-wheeled maxi-scooters.

Leno starts the presentation by chatting with Tesla Big Cheese Elon Musk and goes over lots of basic information about the electric Roadster such as the origin of the chassis, the battery pack, the transmission situation and so on. The best part is when he hits the road. Because the car is so quiet, Jay can easily be heard by the camera in the chase car as he tells and shows us how much fun the thing is to drive. He quickly leaves the camera behind. Again and again.

In the Vectrix clip, Leno talks with chief marketing officer, Jeff Morrill while Dana (family name unknown), head of service, hangs out in the background ready to pounce into action should he be needed. He isn't. They cover everything from range and speed, to the starting procedure and then finally go for a drive on a couple of two-wheelers and the soon-to-be-released three wheeler. Jay admits, "I didn't want to like it but I do." He seems to have a good time but does voice a desire for a bit more speed and range. He doesn't try out the three-wheeler as he thinks it's a little dorky but allows it is fascinating engineering. I think he was just being nice.

LG's LH2300 Touch Web phone says "Hello UI" in Korean

This ain't your father's baby Internet mind you, the LH2300 features a new "Hello UI" riding atop 800 x 480 pixels spread across a 3-inch touchscreen LCD. LG didn't stop with the web though as the LH2300 also packs T-DMB mobile TV, Bluetooth 2.0, microSD memory, and a jog wheel for easy page scrolling. Its 3 megapixel camera sports face recognition and anti-shake tech. No specifics on the included "high speed" data service. Nevertheless, that front facing camera's a pretty good clue that this pup won't be riding EDGE when it launches in Korea next month for a mere $600 US equivalent.

The green plastic-y version that had just been uncovered - I think for a video team's camera - bears only slight resemblance to the rendering that appeared on the X-Prize screen. It looks even less like the previous version of the Air Car that we've seen before. We'll be sitting down with the people behind the Air Car later today to figure out just what it is we're looking at here.

LG's LH2300 Touch Web phone say "Hello UI" in Korean

Filed under:

Want the Internet in your pocket? Good, because that's what LG is offering to South Koreans with its new LG-LH2300 Touch Web phone.

Stanford researchers cram 12,616 tiny lenses into a 3D camera

Filed under:

With the megapixel race already past the point of noticeable benefit to consumers, it looks like the next camera arms race will be the number of lenses your rig sports -- a team at Stanford is working on a 3D camera that uses 12,616 micro-lenses to generate high quality 3 megapixel images with self-contained "depth maps" that measure the distance to every object in the frame. The system works by focusing each lens above four different overlapping sensor arrays, which work in concert to determine depth -- just like your eyes. Unlike similar systems, the Stanford rig is able to use that data to create a depth map without lasers, prisms, or even complex calibration, which will allow the team to shrink the tech down to compact and cellphone camera size. Once it's ubiquitous, the teams says depth map information can be used to do anything enhance facial recognition systems to improving robot vision, but there's still a long way to go -- the team has just started trying to work out how to manufacture the system.

Lowly (but 3G) Nokia 3555 hits retail for T-Mobile

Right on time, the Nokia 3555 flip has come to add precisely zero spice or flair to T-Mobile's nascent 3G lineup, a ragtag group of middling phones that currently includes the Samsung t639 and t819 along with the Nokia 6263. To be fair, the $50 price on contract is plenty easy on the pocketbook, but we don't see anyone getting too excited about the VGA camera or bland styling -- and it's not like there's an expansive display here to take advantage of mobile browsing atop T-Mobile's AWS UMTS network or anything cool like that. Alas, you can get this blue bundle of joy starting today.

Even the Weinermobile is downsizing! Now based on a MINI Cooper S!

The Oscar Mayer Weinermobile is one of America's automotive icons. The giant hot dogs have rolled around the country since the original appeared in 1936 promoting the brand's products. There have been numerous generations over the last seven decades built on a variety of truck and motorhome chassis. It now appears that rising fuel prices have even forced the weiner to shrink. The newest Weinermobile is built on top of a MINI Cooper S and an ABC news crew got it on camera this week. Dallas considers shutting off red light cams, since they're working too well and harming revenue

There's just one, fairly ironic, flaw to the otherwise totally lovable red light cameras that adorn Dallas: they work too well. Turns out the cams have curtailed red light infractions by 50 percent, which in turn has put a budget crunch on City Hall. The city is now considering stopping its planned rollout of more cameras, or shutting down the cameras on a rotating basis -- upkeep when off is next to nothing, but the city pays $3,799 per month per online camera to its service provider. That sounds like quite a spend y broadband bill, but we're not the experts here. Just remember kids, your government wants what's best for you, and what's best for you is a well-funded government, alright?

The above leaked image of the phone shows it to be similar to LG's Prada phone, but apparently there's no designer branding to be had here -- just like AT&T's upcoming Prada-inspired LG Vu. Other than that, erm, innovative menu, rumored infos include a 3.2 megapixel camera, micro USB, microSDHC, and an on-screen QWERTY keyboard for text input. Word is the phone was slated for the end of the month, but now might be delayed until April. We suppose we'll be finding out soon enough.

New York 2008 preview: Automotive X-Prize will name title sponsor, big bucks prize purse

I'll forgive you if you thought the Automotive X Prize had started already. Not the actual race, of course, which is coming in 2009-2010, but the preliminary parts. That's when the organizers will be announcing not only the title sponsor of the event but also the exact amount of the multimillion dollar prize purse. General Mobile's DST3G does two SIMs the 3G way

It's not the prettiest thing we've ever seen, but like several of mysterious manufacturer General Mobile's models, the DST3G candybar supports exactly twice as many SIM cards as your average handset. The whole dual SIM thing is kinda played out at this point, though, so what other ace can you pull out of your sleeve to separate yourself from the crowd? For the DST3G, that ace just happens to be support for UMTS 900 / 1800 / 1900 / 2100 (in addition to GSM with EDGE on 900 / 1800 / 1900), making it a world 3G traveler. Quadband 3G phones are rare enough as it is, but the dual SIM capability on top of that is just about unprecedented. Other goodies include a 2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, and QVGA display; look for it next month for a to-be-announced price.

Sprint's Sanyo Katana LX gets the FCC rundown

That rumored Katana II replacement, the creatively-named Katana LX, is looking more real than ever now that the FCC's labs have put it through the ringer. If the remainder of the rumor ends up checking out, the LX ended up passing the federal checkpoint just in the nick of time en route to an April launch. One thing that concerns us just a tad is that we're having a hard time finding an external display or a camera, though we imagine it's possible that one or both are crammed into that black area near the hinge; if not, this bad boy's going to make a pretty miserable Katana II successor since the older model carried both features. Needless to say, EV-DO isn't in the cards either way.

Assystem City Car - yes, you can laugh

Perhaps if the Assystem City Car didn't look like a time traveling street sweeper from Uranus it wouldn't be the butt of so many jokes (So very sorry). Of course, what do you expect from Swiss designer Franco Sbarro, a man with a history of, um, interesting designs. It is a bit of a shame, too, because this thing actually has lots of very neat-o tech incorporated into it as well as several green features. For example, according to their website, it's a hybrid. The front wheel has an electric motor in it whilst the back is petrol driven. Also, it's 95 percent recyclable or re-useable, which ought to come in handy shortly after the conclusion of the Geneva Motor Show where it made its debut.

On the tech side, the Assystem City Car has external cameras which recognize highway signs, pedestrians and traffic lights and "reinforces" them inside your windshield. Other subsystems which show up on your HUD include telephony, hi-fi, video, and oh, navigation in case you actually want to drive somewhere after you're done being entertained. Safety is not forgotten in this concept either. Not only will the biometric iris analyzer let you know if you are too drunk tired to drive, it will also immobilize the engine and send you a text message in case of an "unauthorized intruder." True story.

Vectrix scooter eligible for $1,500 rebate in California

According to a news item posted on the Vectrix website, California will be offering a $1,500 rebate for purchasers of the electric Vectrix scooter. Early adopters will not be punished either, as the rebate is retroactive to purchases of these $11,000 EVs made as far back as May 2007.

In other news, and as a follow-up to our recent article regarding police in the U.K. riding on Vectrix scooters to patrol parking lots, we decided to let you know that the city of Sacramento, CA, has also chosen to use the all electric maxi-scooter for certain enforcement duties. We imagine that the choice was made easier by the fact that the scooters were practically given to them, cosing only $1 each for four months, but whatever. The City of Sacramento is the first to take advantage of the offer from Vectrix but, at that price, they may not be the last.

Geneva 2008: GM's Bob Lutz and Mark Adams on biofuels and Saab 9-x (video)

GM's biofuel parade in Geneva marches on with GM vice chairman Bob Lutz and Mark Adams, vp of design of GM Europe, talk to the Newspress cameras about bioethanol and the new Saab 9-X BioHybrid. Lutz talks mostly about how ethanol is the best short-term way to use less gasoline. For those of you interested in why Mr. Crock of Sh*t's would care about using less gas, he says that reducing CO2 emissions is just as important as reducing oil imports from unfriendly countries. Speaking about th e 9-X BioHybrid, Adams explains a bit about the concept's aeronautic heritage (see the rear window) and talks a bit about the next-generation GM Hybrid system. Watch 'em both after the jump.
